The full story
Jacks of Dunmow, Essex, have been supplying quality outdoor clothing, footwear and equipment from their Great Dunmow shop for over 50 years.
Established in 1952 by Jack Cox, the family owned company is now run by the third generation of the Cox family - Darren and Jude Cox - with the fourth helping out on Saturdays!
The purchase of the adjoining shop in 1999 effectively doubled the size of the Jacks shop and, after hours of brainstorming and late night meetings, was imaginatively called Jills (in case you were wondering about our website address). It’s squarely aimed at women and children and is staffed by a team of knowledgeable ladies. So if you need advice from a woman’s perspective feel free to give us a call. Ditto men, blokes and blokes stuff is next door.
The Saffron Walden shop was opened in 2008 and offers the same range of products as the Dunmow store. Managed by Jude Cox (husband Darren runs the Dunmow branch), the shop provides people around the Saffron Walden area a wide selection of top quality clothing from leading manufacturers, hundreds of essentials and accessories for your great expedition, and a wealth of knowledge and experience gathered over many years.
Wide range
Specialising in quality outdoor clothing, footwear and equipment, the current hi-tech products are a far cry from the simple ‘necessity’ products available in the early 1950s.
In recent years, the company has responded to the increasing popularity of participation sports, and have developed specialist ranges of footwear, clothing and equipment for a wide range of outdoor activities.
From skiing and boarding to trekking and mountaineering, Jacks can supply you with the best clothing and footwear available, along with the hard-to-find experience that only comes from a well trained staff who have used – and, more importantly, relied upon – many of the products themselves during their travels around the world.
Website retailing doesn’t suit every product though, and customers are encouraged to vist the shop for certain items. Safety features are best explained by experienced staff; expedition equipment will need to be considered as a whole, especially when weight and size are a consideration; and footwear that will serve for many years needs careful thought before purchase – things that are often conveniently overlooked by some price-driven sites.
The shop also stocks a large selection of men’s and women’s leisurewear which has proved very popular with customers of all ages.

Jacks of Dunmow has a constantly expanding product range from the world’s leading manufacturers, including: Barbour, Hunter, Le Chameau, Berghaus, Meindl, Crag Hoppers, lafuma, Columbia, Jack Wolfskin and Weirdfish.
